On their web pages, authors typically show their book covers, sales copy about the book, and links, most typically to Amazon or Audible, where their offerings can be purchased. These are "landing pages". To sell ebooks and audiobooks direct, an additional link (or a substitute link) is provided on landing pages to the HANDS shopping cart where offerings are also offered for purchase direct. When a reader/listener purchases the ebook or audiobook, they receive an email from BookFunnel which gives them a download link and instructions on how to read or listen on the device they normally use. A major benefit of using BookFunnel for distribution is the ability to provide digital rights protection to prevent piracy. BookFunnel also provides outstanding help support for anyone who has difficulty getting the ebook or audio onto their specific device, and it's probably why the vast majority of ebooks and audiobooks that are sold direct are distributed by BookFunnel.
BookFunnel makes available a large number of marketing tools to promote sales that HANDS utilizes under the 60% Plan.
The primary motivation for this initiative stems from a simple question: Why do authors invest so much time, money, and effort promoting their books and web sites, only to direct potential buyers to Amazon and Audible, where their share of the book revenues is small? We believe there is a more direct, profitable way to help authors retain a large percentage of their book sales, give them the resources to hire human narrators, and create partnerships that represent the human creation of art.
Under the 80% Plan, authors receive 80% of the net book revenues without having to deal with credit card services, shopping carts, mailing lists, sales taxes, or the distribution of their ebooks and audiobooks. HANDS is not involved in the promotion of the author’s books, ebooks, or audiobooks under this plan. They just make the work available by direct sale and send you the proceeds.
Under the 60% Plan, authors receive 60% of the net book revenues (the gross revenues less any campaign-specific expenses such as advertising), and HANDS collaborates with them to plan and execute promotional campaigns. HANDS does the majority of the work to carry out those campaigns. Authors must still be involved to assist in providing covers and book copy in Word or epub format.
Please note that HANDS can only work on books that are not restricted by exclusivity contracts. In particular, if an ebook is available exclusively on Kindle Unlimited or an audiobook is available exclusively from Audible, it cannot be sold direct using HANDS.
Under a Royalty Payoff arrangement, the author and narrator will split 80% revenues or 60% revenues under an agreed-upon distribution arrangement. Here is a HANDS payment spreadsheet that provides a starting point for negotiations between authors and narrators. HANDS can execute dispersals based on whatever agreement is arrived at.
HANDS makes possible a wide variety of author/narrator contractual relationships. Here is a list of possible author/narrator working arrangements that range from narrator buyout of audio rights to serialization of an audiobook to build mailing lists. With imagination, many more scenarios can be considered.
